Our Story

living elenae was founded in 2018 with a vision to transform Singapore's residential interiors through biophilic design principles. Our founder, inspired by childhood memories of tropical gardens and the healing power of nature, recognized that urban environments often disconnect us from the natural world that sustains us.

Working initially from a small studio in Chinatown, we began by helping individual homeowners incorporate plants and natural materials into their living spaces. Each project taught us something new about how design choices affect mood, productivity, and overall wellbeing. We observed how clients' stress levels decreased, sleep improved, and family interactions became more harmonious in spaces that honored natural rhythms and materials.

Over the years, our understanding deepened. We studied research on air quality improvement through plant selection, learned about sustainable material sourcing in Southeast Asia, and developed relationships with local craftspeople who work with reclaimed wood and natural fibers. We realized that creating healthy interiors requires not just aesthetic choices, but a holistic approach that considers environmental impact, occupant health, and long-term sustainability.

Today, from our Club Street studio, we serve clients throughout Singapore who seek interiors that feel restorative rather than draining. Our approach combines evidence-based biophilic design principles with Singapore's unique tropical context, creating spaces that work with the climate rather than against it. Each project reflects our belief that beautiful interiors should contribute to both personal wellbeing and planetary health.

What Guides Us

The principles that shape every design decision we make

Wellbeing First

Every design choice prioritizes the physical and mental health of inhabitants, creating spaces that reduce stress and promote restoration.

Environmental Responsibility

We carefully consider the environmental impact of every material and process, choosing sustainable options that minimize harm to our planet.

Collaborative Process

We listen carefully to your needs and preferences, working together to create spaces that truly reflect your lifestyle and values.

Our Standards

Material Selection Criteria

Every material we recommend undergoes thorough evaluation. We prioritize locally sourced options to reduce transportation impact, seek FSC certification for wood products, verify low-VOC ratings for finishes and paints, and confirm ethical labor practices throughout supply chains. Reclaimed and recycled materials receive preference when quality and safety standards are met.

Our supplier relationships span years of verification and trust-building. We maintain detailed documentation on material origins, processing methods, and environmental certifications, which we share transparently with clients during project planning.

Plant Care and Integration

When incorporating living elenae into designs, we conduct thorough assessments of light conditions, humidity levels, and maintenance capacity. Plant selections reflect realistic care requirements that match client lifestyles rather than aspirational but unsustainable choices.

We provide detailed care instructions, including watering schedules adapted to Singapore's climate, pest prevention strategies using natural methods, and seasonal adjustment guidance. Our follow-up support helps clients develop confidence in maintaining their indoor green spaces.

Air Quality Optimization

Indoor air quality significantly affects health and comfort. Our designs incorporate natural ventilation strategies that work with Singapore's tropical climate, specify low-emission materials for all finishes and furnishings, and integrate air-purifying plants in strategic locations based on NASA research on plant air filtration.

We avoid materials that off-gas harmful compounds, even when they meet basic safety standards. Our specifications include third-party testing documentation for VOC levels, formaldehyde content, and other air quality concerns.

Climate-Responsive Design

Singapore's tropical environment requires design approaches that embrace rather than fight natural conditions. We maximize natural light while managing heat gain, specify materials that perform well in humid conditions, design for natural airflow to reduce cooling needs, and consider monsoon patterns in material durability assessments.

Years of experience with Singapore's climate inform our material choices and spatial arrangements. We understand which natural materials will develop character versus deterioration in tropical conditions, ensuring longevity without excessive maintenance requirements.

Areas of Expertise

Our team brings specialized knowledge across multiple dimensions of sustainable interior design. We understand the scientific research behind biophilic design benefits, including studies on stress reduction through natural views, air quality improvement via plant selection, and cognitive performance enhancement in nature-rich environments. This evidence base informs every recommendation we make.

Material expertise extends beyond aesthetic considerations to include lifecycle analysis, embodied carbon calculations, and toxicity assessments. We evaluate not just how materials look and perform, but their full environmental footprint from extraction through disposal. This comprehensive approach helps clients make informed decisions that align with their values while meeting practical requirements.

Our understanding of Singapore's unique context comes from years of hands-on experience. We know which natural materials handle humidity gracefully, which plants thrive in typical HDB light conditions, and how to work with the constraints of compact urban spaces. We've developed relationships with local suppliers who share our commitment to ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility.

Color psychology and sensory design inform our palette selections and material combinations. We consider how natural light changes throughout the day, how different textures affect tactile experience, and how color temperature influences mood. These subtle elements combine to create environments that feel intuitively comfortable without obvious manipulation.

Project management capabilities ensure smooth implementation of design concepts. We coordinate with contractors, oversee material deliveries, and conduct quality checks throughout installation. Our goal is not just to hand over beautiful plans, but to ensure the final space matches the design vision while staying within agreed timelines and budgets.
